Why You SHOULD Own A Car In NYC

Of all the cities in the country, New York has the reputation of being the most transit-friendly. Indeed, in common perception, New Yorkers do not have cars, eschewing them in favor of the subway and buses. However, in reality, quite a few New Yorkers are choosing to own cars in order to make their lives easier.

The biggest reason car-owning New Yorkers cite for owning a car in the city is to make life with children easier to navigate. When you have kids, the added time of taking subways and buses and waiting for connections makes a big difference to your quality of life. Renting cars or using zip cars are another popular option, but doing so requires that you lug car seats and child equipment to and from the car each time you use it.

Once children get older, there are other reasons to own a car. Getting from place to place with small children is hard enough, but if your child has extracurricular activities that require equipment, getting around using public transportation is difficult and unwieldy. Imagine taking hockey equipment on a bus and you’ll understand why many parents prefer to own a car.

Even for those without children, there are reasons to consider car ownership in the city. One common reason for getting a car is because it simplifies your work commute. Many places are not completely accessible via public transportation, making a car the best way to get to and from your job. In other cases, the convenience of taking a car justifies the cost, as public transportation can be a lengthy process.

Another reason to consider getting a car is if you have friends or family outside the city that you visit often or would like to visit often. It’s easier and cheaper to have your own car to visit friends on Long Island than it is to rent a car every time you want to spend a weekend outside the city.

A surprising reason to consider getting a car in the city is because it may be more cost-effective. This sounds strange, especially considering the high cost of gas in the city and the price of garage rentals, but in many areas of the city, street parking is reasonably easy to find and because you aren’t traveling long distances, the gas isn’t a major cost factor. It might be less expensive to pay car insurance and gas than it is to pay for subway and bus fares all month long.

Counter-intuitive as it may sound, there are many reasons to consider getting a car when you live in New York City. From ease of transport with children, to time-savings, to cost-savings, more people are deciding that car ownership in the city makes good sense.

The 3 Most Fuel-Efficient Cars of 2016

A car is a necessity for most people today, especially for those who are always on the go. There are many conventional cars now that offer an impressive fuel economy, especially those that are in contrast as to what a person may be trading in. Aside from that, alternative powertrains also offer an increasing number of choices, with electrics, diesel and hybrids that all carry an appeal for different types of drivers.

If you are planning to buy a new car and you want something that is very fuel-efficient but also easy on your budget, here are the 3 most fuel-efficient cars of 2016:

2016 Honda Fit – This is a very efficient and reliable vehicle which includes all of the modern connectivity features that you can also find in the expensive cars, the only difference is that the Honda Fit is much more affordable than them. This Honda Fit 5-door subcompact still leaves the market in awe with its high quality performance and proves that a subcompact car can also provide more than basic transportation.

The car’s magic seats allow the owners to maximize the cargo area with ease without compromising the large rear seat. The little engine and variable automatic transmission both ensure an excellent fuel economy while its’ small and light weight size promotes for very high acceleration performance. With its sharp steering and well balanced suspension, you can handle it much better that what you’d expect.

2.       2016 Lincoln MKZ 2.0 AWD – This car is a bold and distinctive American ride offering luxury and comfort at an affordable price. This car is very ideal for those who are constantly on the road. It can handle with anything that Mother Nature may throw its way. It has many notable features like a standard push-button automatic transmission, front and all-wheel drive, inflatable rear seat belts, a turbo 4-cylinder and V-6 engine. Its transmissions are 6-speed automatic with OD and auto-manual. Many would love its available massive and excellent sliding panoramic roof, unique style, and a quiet ride experience.

2015 BMW i3 – This is a very cool electric car and the less expensive of the bunch so far with a very great design. This car is made from a lightweight and carbon fiber- reinforced plastic. It works great both on open roads and highways. It also provides the users with calm, soothing and capable experience throughout any crowded urban areas. The car’s front part as well as its side is distinctive but the rear is a nicely cluttered intersection of curves, straight lines and multiple materials which you may find appealing.

Drive.Dive.Devour. Interview [Full-Time RVers]

In January of 2014, Kerensa and Brandon decided to ditch their "normal" corporate jobs and lifestyle in the NY metro area. They decided to embark on a journey that many have dreamed of, but few have the courage to do.

Brandon and Kerensa are Product Designers who both share a passion for exploring, scuba diving, and food and are on the hunt to find the best spots in the country.
I had the privilege of interviewing the couple and happened to catch them out walking the dogs on a beautiful summer day in Colorado!!

Q: What size is your RV?

A: We have a 40 ft motorhome but are looking to downsize in order to be more versatile with our camp spots and fit into smaller space.

Q: How are you able to operate a full fledged business in such a compact space?

A: We actually have a custom set up which we designed to take the place of our "dinet" where there used to be a table there is now a beautiful office setup in which we design our projects.

Q: How do you find a balance between work & play since you are on what some people would call a "Permanent Vacation"?

A: We're definitely learning as we go, since most of the tourist sites we want to see are open during the day, sometimes we to do the opposite of a normal 9-5 working schedule and go out to the city/tourist spots during the week to beat the crowd. Then in the evenings and on the weekend we may stay in and work. This allows us to beat the crowd, as well as see all the sights we want to see while still getting our work done.

Q: How do you handle keeping clean and maintaining the vehicle?

A1: I try to pick up stuff on a daily basis. Since it is such a small space it tends to get cluttered quickly. Brandon doesn't really care as much as I do about the day to day clutter but whenever we move to a new location that day is pretty much dedicated to cleaning out and organizing the RV.

A2: As far as maintenance we are sure to follow the user manual as well as get our fluids changed yearly. Our generator actually just let us know that it needs to be serviced. So we plan ahead, find a reputable place and set aside a day or so for service.

Q: Have you had any major breakdowns or mechanical problems since you've been on the road?

A: Well luckily we haven't been stranded... One thing we did find was that the previous owner of our RV had taken it down to Florida and had never washed the salt water from underneath the vehicle. We found out when the bottom of the RV rusted to the point where the plastic parts of the fender literally were falling off. So Brandon & I had to makeshift braces out of aluminum on the side of the road in order to hold the bumper in place. We have since replaced all the metal on the undercarriage.

Q: What are some of the day-to-day struggles that you didn't have to deal with before you were living in an RV?

A: As far as day-to-day struggles, the sanitation is very different. Dumping tanks all the time is definitely a lifestyle change, It's just something you don't think about when you're living in a house, I'm not sure if I'm just very sensitive to it but it seems like the bathroom always smells, even though we keep it clean.

Also getting used to cooking in such a smaller kitchen was a pretty big adjustment. You have to put things away quickly to avoid clutter in such a small space. Learning to use a microwave/conventional oven to cook also took a little bit of strategy especially when we need to use both at the same time!

Q: What kind of meals do you usually prepare on the road?

A: When the weather is good we like to use the grill a lot. I(Kerensa) happen to be vegetarian, so usually one side of the grill is cooking veggies and the other side is cooking some type of meat. Pretty much anything that I used to cook at home I still cook in the RV.

"Part of our blog is dedicated to finding delicious local foods. Brandon & I really love to eat out and explore the food scene wherever we are! Then I like to take it home and and actually try to cook it myself. Our crock pot comes in very handy because I can throw something in there and leave it on while we go explore." -Kerensa

Q: How do you decide where and when you are going to eat out?

A: I usually go out and walk around to get a feel for the lay of the land, as well as search tourist sites online, read yelp reviews, urban spoon, trip adviser etc. A lot of times we like to talk to locals for recommendations too. And we love going out to local Farmer's Markets.

Q: Can you give some insight into the costs associated with this type of lifestyle?

A: It's actually pretty normal compared to what we had before, a lot of people have a mortgage payment or a rent payment on a house. But with an RV you probably have either a smaller payment, or you've paid it off. So if you're traveling with a car AND an RV you might have payments or you might not. Aside from that for us there is the normal cost of food and groceries, as well as a budget for eating out.

Q: What about maintenance?

A: Well it's the same as maintaining your house you have to maintain your RV just as well. I remember one time when we were living in a house, we got home from vacation and had to rebuild our whole roof! Luckily none of our RV maintenance has been nearly that expensive. Fortunately our service agreement, commonly known as an extended warranty has covered most of our engine repair expenses. It seems like there would be a lot more things different but really we've found it very similar to the cost of living we had before.

Q: What advice do you have for the readers at home who want to transition into this type of lifestyle, but are a little bit hesitant about getting their "feet wet"?

A: I say just do it really... it's pretty great! We both love it, we are very happy with our lives. Just make sure to do your research. Go to RV shows to see what you like, research blogs, because there are a lot of people out there who are blogging about what we're doing and the lifestyle that they're living. Reading those posts really helped us prepare before we actually "took off". It allowed us to have a sense of what we needed.

There is a common phrase that goes around:
      "Buy your last RV first."

I personally think this tip applies well to a lot of retirees; but not necessarily us. It works if you're just a straight up snowbird, moving north to south by the seasons. But if you're like us, for example we used to camp. And that was fine for us until we decided to get an RV. But my point is, you don't really know what you want/need until you actually get out there. We started our journey thinking hey we want more space with a 40ft RV but now we're thinking why not go smaller? Save some money and we will be able to travel to a lot more places with more mobility.

Q: Last question, throughout all of your travels thus far, which place has been your favorite to visit?

A: Probably Burlington, Vermont. It was beautiful over there in the summer, the weather isn't too hot. And Brandon got to go diving a lot which was nice and it was just an overall good time! Also now that we are in Colorado witnessing the changing of seasons over here is absolutely beautiful.

Top 3 Boating Spots in East Bay

The East Bay offers boaters plenty of great spots to enjoy a day of being out on the water. As well as great opportunities to explore a vast area either in the large bay itself or on one of the many smaller lakes that feed the bay. This is one reason why so many boaters choose to spend their days in the vast East Bay area as it offers so many places to explore and enjoy.

Of the many great boating spots, here are three that really stood out to us in terms of what they feature and the access they provide to the bay area. For boaters who are looking to take their craft to different parts of the bay, here are three locations that will serve you well.

Lake Charbot Regional Park

This lake is one of the primary sources of water for the East Bay and a popular destination for boating and fishing. The 315 acre lake is stocked with catfish and trout along with bass, crappie and a number of other fish. There are also many amenities that can be found around the lake which makes it the perfect place for camping, hiking, biking, jogging and other fun activities.
However, due to the toxic algae in the lake it is not recommended for swimming and boaters are advised to never touch the algae with their hands especially if it is blue-green in color. Although such toxic algae blooms are relatively rare, you cannot be too careful.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline – San Leandro Bay

Located near the Oakland Airport, this 741 acre shoreline offers a great boat launch site located near Doolittle Drive. The nearby marshes are home to many shorebirds, so it is recommended that you take your boat out slowly to the deeper water. The season for jet skiing and other fast watercraft starts on April 1st and ends October 31st. This location also features the 50 acre Arrowhead Marsh and the famed “Duplex Cone” sculpture by Roger Berry that tracks the path of the sun on summer and winter solstice.

Once you are out in the deeper water, there are plenty of places to explore the East Bay from this location which makes for a great day trip.

Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreational Area – Pleasanton

This beautiful boating area consists of an 80 acre lake within the 265 acre park area. It is perfect for swimming, fishing & boating and includes a boat launch and rental facilities along with docks which are perfect for fishing.

You can launch boats that are up to 17 feet long, although they must be electric powered as no gas engines are permitted on the lake including personal watercraft. For boating enthusiasts who enjoy a secluded, beautiful area to enjoy a day on the waves, the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreational Area is the perfect place to put in your small craft.

Overall, the East Bay provides many great locations for boating of all types that will allow you to enjoy the open bay or the many smaller lakes that dot the area.

The 2016 Rolls Royce Dawn

The history of Rolls Royce begins more than 100 years ago. They introduced their first car in 1906 and ever since this car brand has become a synonym for luxury and quality.

Of course, just like every other car manufacturer they’ve had some ups and downs, but starting from the beginning of the 21st century, Rolls Royce has been witnessing a true renaissance. One of their most popular lines in the last decade is the Wraith coupe based off of the Ghost model. This is the reason why the management of this famous brand has decided to invest in another model that will include all the positive things from the Wraith model and include some new features that are sure to make it even better.

A few months ago, the British manufacturer of luxury vehicles, Rolls Royce has officially announced that they will introduce their latest model called Dawn in 2016. As the name suggests, this model should present something completely new and will be used as the “dawn” of a new even more successful era in Rolls Royce. Judging by the first images and the information that has been revealed thus far, the 2016 Rolls Royce Dawn will surely be part of the fierce competition between luxury car manufacturers in 2016. Now let’ see what we can expect from this exclusive model.

One of the first aspects that most people notice in cars is their appearance. Rolls Royce Dawn is designed to be a convertible version of the highly successful Wraith coupe. This doesn’t mean that besides the roof everything else is the same. On a contrary, only the rear bumper and doors will be alike. This model will have all the characteristics of typical Rolls Royce convertible cars – the expected sporty yet elegant appearance. The designers have decided to use 21 inch wheels and headlamps that look very similar to the ones found on the 2014 Ghost II model. The designers have also come up with a great solution for the roof which seems to take very little space in the back of the car. This solution does not affect the durability and efficiency of the roof.

Even though the car may look smaller than most Rolls Royce models, the manufacturer is assuring everyone that there is enough room to comfortably seat four passengers. In order to provide better comfort, 2016 Rolls Royce Dawn comes with a combination of black and mandarin cowhides used in the seats as well as Candlewood used on the inner side of the doors, dashboard and panel between the seats. In addition, users can enjoy the touch screen on the panel, the top notch audio system and few other features which can’t be found in the Wraith model.\
Finally, the most important things that make this car what it is happens to be the engine. Rolls Royce Dawn comes with a powerful 6.6-liter turbo V12 engine which is more or less the same as the one found in Ghost II. It has 563 horsepower and 575lb/ft of torque. This is enough power to reach 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

We believe that 2016 Rolls Royce model will be a huge hit, at least for those who can afford it!

The 2016 Maserati Alfieri

Trust Maserati to be pleasantly different and it delivers. Across the world, major automakers are playing it safe. Despite some riveting innovation and rather ordinary creative experiments, the automobile industry is not exactly witnessing a huge transformation. From designs to the specs, most brands are going down the formulaic route. Every now and then a brand comes up with a promise that breaks the mould. The Maserati Alfieri is certainly in that category.

The brand is putting the legacy of Alfieri Maserati on the line here with the 2016 Maserati Alfieri, named after the fifth Maserati brother. Would it pay off? One cannot say but let us delve into the review of the 2016 Maserati Alfieri.

The Car

The 2016 Maserati Alfieri would replace the GranCoupe. One look at the Alfieri and it is anything but ordinary. It oozes style, sophistry and aesthetics. The makers have certainly not confined to restrains as far as the detailing goes. While it is not out of this world, it is certainly interesting in an era of formulaic fluidic lines selling in the name of design and detail. Speculation is rife that the Alfieri will start selling at $100,000 and upwards.

The Specs

The Maserati Alfieri base model will roll out with a 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, capable of generating 410 hp at 450 lb-ft of torque. The premium variant will have a 3.8 liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers. The latter is in line with the existing GT models that sports V8 engines capable of generating a max 550 hp. The premium Maserati Alfieri is expected to generate at least 525 hp. There is a SuperSport variant that will be capable of generating a minimum of 600 hp. That is some power in a sleek car and it is right up there to fight it out with Mercedes and Ferrari.

The base model will roll out with a rear wheel drive system and an eight speed automatic gearbox. The higher variants will have all wheel drive systems with a similar gearbox. Maserati has claimed that the Alfieri will be more fuel efficient than the GT models, by around 15%. The car is expected to have a top speed of more than 185 miles per hour in all variants and it should be able to race up to 60 miles per hour in around three seconds.

The Maserati Alfieri would sport an all-leather 2+2 interior layout and although its design may be directly inspired by the older GT models, the details make it special and rather aggressive.

How to Maximize Space in Your RV or Camper

When it comes to your camper or RV, space can become a scarcity and it does not take much to fill it up unless you are a little creative. Basically, you are in a vehicle that appears to use most of its space for a wide variety of features that are designed for your comfort, but allow for little else. So, you will have to strike the balance between finding storage for your many items that while being creative and secure as you travel down the road.

Today’s RVs and campers are designed with more features than their predecessors, however you can still find some more room for storage space if you use the following tips.

Shoe Organizers, Hooks and Racks

The storage space inside your camper or RV can be found along the walls, doors, seats and ceiling. This is where having space-saving organizers can really pay off as you can use all the available areas inside the unit without cluttering up the floor or standard storage spaces. You can use hooks for clothes and bags of items, racks and shoe organizers for cleaning liquids and brushes, flashlights and other smaller items.  Just be sure that they are secure when on the road so that you don’t have stuff flying around inside if you have to make a sharp turn, brake or accelerate.

Slide Out Surfaces

These are areas where items can be slid out such as walls, stairs, under beds, between drawers and the like. A slide out cutting board for example can save a considerable amount of space in the kitchen area. Look for spaces between places and you’ll find areas where you can place even more items.

Inside Cabinet Doors

A great place for the trash is a container that hangs inside a cabinet door. You’ll need to be weight conscious as these types of doors are not meant to carry a great deal of weight, but they are the perfect places for lightweight items that otherwise might fly around your RV or camper when it is one the move. Plus, racks or storage items that hang from cabinet doors are inexpensive as well.

Velcro Surfaces

For small items that need to stay out such as remotes, simply glue some Velcro to the surface of a wall and then put Velcro on the back of the remotes so that they can stay in sight and out of the way. This is a great idea for any small item that should be kept out and not stored. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jspproductId=1386398&KPID=1140143&kpid=1140143&pla=pla_1140143

Backs of Seats

You can purchase storage items that can hang from the backs of the front seats to keep other small items organized. This can be used for items that you normally take with you when travelling outside your RV or camper which makes them easier to find.

Overall, maximizing the space in your RV or camper is inexpensive and easy to do once you commit yourself to using all the bare space from the ceiling to the walls and the floor.

What are Harvest Hosts?

People who drive an RV know that it can be a very rewarding experience, but sometimes it seems the RV traveling lifestyle can make it hard for people to stop in a place that makes them feel like they are home. This is the reason why Harvest hosts was invented. A network of farms and wineries have decided to start allowing people in RV vehicles to camp out in their lands, but they will also be given the chance to get to see their production up close and their stay will come at no cost at all!

The great thing about Harvest Hosts is that it allows people to get the opportunity to purchase local products that are grown or produced in the area. The idea is to provide the RV community with a friendly place to stay for a few days, while they also get the chance to watch up close when the farmers get to work or the wineries start to produce their wine.

This brilliant idea is meant to help people feel encouraged to purchase local products from the locations they visit. This is the main reason why this is such a great and innovative idea that will benefit both parties involved.

The only true requirements are that you are considerate and you support your hosts by purchasing their products. There is no required amount for you to purchase, but the more you buy, the more you will be supporting the people who work so hard day by day to create these products for you.

Being able to participate in the making of these products is another excellent activity that is provided in all farms and wineries that are affiliated with harvest hosts. This is the kind of activity that makes you appreciate the products and services that are provided to you even more. This is the reason why this interaction is so useful and also encourages the promotion of the quality products you try out. Keep this in mind at all times and you will have the best time when you decide to park your RV in one of the many gorgeous farms and wineries of the Harvest Hosts network.

Most of them even allow you to have pets with you, with the exception of alpaca farms. The one thing that all RV owners need to remember is that in order to qualify to be allowed to enter the Harvest Hosts network as an RV guest, you need to have a self-contained vehicle. This means that you RV needs to be equipped with an interior toilet and it should also have electricity and water. This means that all of your personal needs will always be taken care of in your RV and not in any of the installations at which you are staying.

The stay is meant to last 24 hours tops, but people can ask to stay longer and the chances of that happening will depend on how supportive you have been to the host. Any special requests will be dealt with directly with your host. Once you join the network, you will be able to get a list of all the hosts that are in your area or the area you are planning to travel to. This makes it very easy for you to find at least a couple of them near to your traveling locations.

If you decide to travel with another set of people in a different RV, they will also have to be members of the Harvest Hosts network in order to be given access to the farms or wineries that they visit with you.
